Near Infrared Light for Depression

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Depression is a mental health disorder that is characterized by a loss of interest in activities and a persistent depressed mood. It affects millions of people worldwide and many people leave it untreated.

Why? Perhaps they think they can just “snap” out of it. Perhaps they are scared to try pills. Maybe they are ashamed to speak to a therapist. Or maybe they are just so depressed that they’re not sure what to do.

What many people don’t realize is that depression sufferers see the world in a completely different way. It can be nearly impossible to shake oneself out of a depressive state because the mind is in such an altered and impaired state. In order to get out of depression, you generally need someone – or something’s help.

There are options, of course. One can take the “pill” route and hope that medication can help (and not create dependence / addiction). Another option is to try speaking with a therapist. And then there are the riskier, more aggressive treatments like electroconvulsive therapy.

But what is one to do if they’d rather not use pharmaceuticals to attempt to cure depression? Or if pharmaceuticals and/or therapy haven’t worked?

Studies show that there may be another option — light. Near Infrared Light (NIR), to be specific.

In this study, 39 patients between 2013 and 2017 were treated with NIR. Before and after treatment, they provided depression self-assessment data. 36 of the 39 patients showed a robust positive response. Suicidal ideation resolved in all but two patients. Patients remained in remission for up to 55 months after just a single course of NIR treatment.

In another study, 10 patients with major depression and anxiety were also given just a single NIR treatment and began showing significant improvements after 2-4 weeks with no negative side effects.

There’s very little to lose and everything to gain with Near Infrared Light. Many people haven’t heard of it because there’s no money to be made in it — unlike pharmaceuticals — anyone can pick up the tools necessary to treat themselves with NIR for less than $100.
