Several different studies have shown a rather large improvement in low back pain while using and after having used red light therapy. Different devices were used in different ways, but once again simple ol` red light seems to make life easier.

Relieving back pain with red light therapy is common among testimonials across the internet. Back pain can be a result of several different issues, and working with a chiropractor and holistic practitioner can be a big part of long term relief, red light therapy will most likely increase the speed of any healing involved.

Infrared therapy for chronic low back pain: A randomized, controlled trial

The objective of the present study was to assess the degree of pain relief obtained by applying infrared (IR) energy to the low back in patients with chronic, intractable low back pain.

In 2006, 39 patients with chronic low back pain were recruited for the trial. 21 patients received the IR light while 18 received placebo. Patient’s pain was rated with a numerical rating scale of 0 to 10. The patients that received the IR light’s pain fell from a 6.9 of 10, to a 3 of 10, which is a 3.9 point drop. The placebo patients fell from a 7.4 of 10, to 6 of 10, which is only a 1.4 point drop. One thing the study does not point out about the placebo patients, was whether they increased their sun exposure or not. Chances are, most people being told ‘red light might help your pain’ may realize red light is part of sun light, and may have increased their sun exposure in an attempt to alleviate their pain.

CONCLUSION

The IR therapy unit used was demonstrated to be effective in reducing chronic low back pain, and no adverse effects were observed.
